Do you think it is possible that, 100 years from now, the perpetual tension between liberals and conservatives in the U.S. will erupt into a violent civil war...or is that the stuff of great fiction?

If it makes any difference: Democrats vs. Republicans, instead of Liberals vs. Conservatives.

Keep in mind, I'm not talking about 5, 10, or 20 years from now. I'm talking about 100 years from today.
A lot of things can happen in that time span. Things could either get better, or it could get worse.

I could see it happening if they were divided geographically, but there's too much that makes this unlikely. It would pit mother against daughter, grandchild against grandparent... And the logistics of how to fight such a war would be bizarre.
I think there is a war being fought around the divide between liberals and conservatives, but it's being fought in impoverished neighborhoods, in Iraq, in racially motivated conflicts, in immigrant communities, in hospital emergency wards and in prisons. It's just that neither party is claiming responsibility for the war.

The problem is, democrats and republicans do not stand for freedom! Both sides have big government agendas! I believe that the free market will be the only thing keeping us from going to war. The more goods and services people have, the better lives a nation can have! When socialism takes over America you can bet that there will be bloodshed! When the conservatives and liberals have spent all our money and cut the head off of the golden goose, and then wonder where the golden eggs went to, people will have no goods or services! This socialism will bring about the biggest war! Someday I believe that there will be a war for freedom again! This time on a world scale! I don't believe it will happen in the US! Many countries will fight for prosperity against the socialists but will fail horribly! The socialists will have absolute power just like the IRS. The will control everything because that is exactly what socialism is. Absolute control! Imagine the people that will be fighting to control you and your loved ones! The human race has still not accepted the fact that people are born into Natural Law! A Civil War will not happen in the US but a freedom movement will be made worldwide!

One would hope that before the next 100 years we would learn something about how to run a government. Now if a republican looks at an animal it's a giraffe - the democrat says that's a big gorilla while the crocodile walks away. Problems and issues are not Democrat or Republican they are American. It's supposed to be America first not the party but they don't seem to get it right.

First of all, I do not think that the USA will exist as a world power in 100 years. The huge influx of Hispanics will have reduced it to a third world country. There most probably will be revolutions, just as there are in Mexico today. There will be an illiterate populace, with the small elite at the top. The elite will speak English, the illiterate will speak Spanish. There will be no "Civil War, " because that implies two equal sides. There will be no equal sides.

It's an interesting question but it supposes that the USA will still exist 100 years from now.
At the rate we are antagonizing each other ( in our political leanings ) we seem to be "at it" at a level greater than friendly opposition. And sometimes it seems that the political party is more important than the country.
I wonder how much of this political animosity is generated by outside groups who are trying to trigger a civil war.
Maybe "They" are trying to keep us so involved with each other that we lack the cohesiveness to be able to put all of our power in one direction.
It's something to think about.

Lamplighter, you said it better than I could. I'm pretty liberal, but some of the people I love are conservative, and a war like that would tear me apart inside.
I think if it came to that, I'd try to seek political asylum in another country, and hope that my conservative family would survive the war, so that after the war was over and it was safe for me to come back, we could be reunited.

Fiction. As soon as a squadron of F-22 Raptors go flying overhead and a fleet of tanks come rolling down the street, both sides will cease all aggression.

In case you haven't noticed, that "war' you're talking about is already taking place ...as we speak! It's a culture war, between the the far left-wing liberals, who want to promote Socialism & the right wing Christian conservatives, who want to retain the basic philosophy of of the Judeo- Christian principles.Truth is always stranger than fiction, & I do hope these partisan groups can resolve the differences betweem them so we can remain a united nation..
