Van Buren, "Little Van," was elected in 1836. He was Andrew Jackson's Vice President and came right after him. He inherited Jackson's unsound economic policies, including the demise of the Bank of the United States. Unsound local banks, the "pet banks," printed and circulated their own money and then many of them folded, creating the Panic of 1837. A severe depression followed. There was a second panic in 1839 and the depression until the 1840 election. In that year more than 80% of the electorate went to the polls, Van Buren was soundly defeated by William Henry Harrison.
