Because it is their strategy - to have as many restaurants as possible, so no one is ever very far away from one. Starbucks and McDonald's are the number one coffee shop and hamburger restaurant, and that is how they did it. Starbucks is even going to double the number of coffee shops in America because they don't think people should have to wait in line for their coffee.

It's because they are franchises and everyone thinks they can make a buck by putting up whatever is the popular fast food of the moment. Right now Starbucks is the place of the moment. So, they pop up like acne on a teenager. The thing is that there are so many people around that as a lot of the stores are small, and don't have a lot of seats, and they have internet connections, they can actually all make money. People will walk around several blocks looking for a place with a seat so they can use their computer. Too many people have time between appointments and need a place to sit and what is better than a coffee place with internet access. As far as mcDonalds, they have just always been around, but actually, in NY they are not everywhere. I have found that you actually have to search for one sometimes. Not that I look that often, but there are so many people here they can all make money.

Have you ever seen "Super Size Me?" I don't know where they get their information, but supposedly NYC has the largest concentration of Mickey D's per square mile than ANYWHERE else in the world!
Remember though, McDonald's couldn't afford to put all those restaurants in NYC if there weren't plenty of PATRONS ready to eat the stuff up!
As for Starbucks, well...a lot of folks love their coffee...for which I can't explain (as a tea drinker myself)!

Because they have good marketing and business strategies. Apparently people like overprocessed food and very expensive coffee.
