Yes - all universities, especially the most prestigious ones are very competitive, and this includes sporting competitions. Most offer sports scholarships - a friend of mine got all his fees payed, plus money for food to ensure he ate properly, just for being a top swimmer, even though his A-level results were below the normal entry grades. You still need to have good academic qualifications, but in addition to showing you are a well-rounded individual, being very good at a particular sport is a big advantage because universities favour anyone who is likely to help them prove how good they are - by winning competitions.

By itself no.

If you have the grades to match and the passion for your subject, then yes. But, it won't make any difference whether your hobby is climbing Everest, representing England at hockey or going to your school's IT club. The important thing is what is says about you. So in your personal statement, don't just say you play hockey for X, say that you are able to organise your time well because you manage to play hockey and do your school work, that it teaches you team work etc etc

Good luck

On its own, it won't get you a place at Oxford, because Oxford is extremely academic and their primary interest will be in your ability to learn. But it certainly won't hurt - if nothing else it'll be something to put on your personal statement, and show you as a three-dimensional person with interests outside of the classroom.

Good luck!

As long as our academic and outside interests are balanced, then it would help. Ultimately they're more interested in our brain though - In my interview for Cambridge they didn't ask me about my outside interests at all, just loads of academic questions (and still offered me a place)

definitely, sports and anything outside of studies they do look for - also if you're in any clubs or anything (not necessarily sport).
