Rating Percentage Index
It is calculated by dividing a teams winning percentage by 4, dividing the opponents' winning percentage by 2, and dividing the opponents' opponents' winning percentage by 4. The sum of the figures is the RPI which is a decimal with a maximum of 1. Therefore RPI is 25% winning percentage, 50% opponents' winning percentage, and 25% opponent's opponent's winning percentage.
RPI is good because it accounts for Stregnth of Schedule and is a much better indicator of talent than the AP poll. The NCAA comittee uses a modified version when they braket the tourny, accounting for home/away games as well.

The basic RPI formula is 1/4 (Winning Percentage) + 1/2(Opponents' Average Winning Percentage) + 1/4 (Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage).
