Instead of reading them to yourself silently, sit and read them out loud. I find its easiest to memorize a whole scene at a time, and always have the line before yours memorized. Get everyone who will to read your lines with you. While your doing chores, or anything that doesn't need your full attention, go over the lines in your head!

When I need to memorize something, I try to connect it to something that is easier to remember, like pictures. If you are trying to memorize lines and you are already in a play, you could just try to remember the "theme" of what you are try to get across and answer the other actors (hoping the memorized their lines, too.)
If you are trying to memorize lines for an audition, I might try to write it down a couple of times. It may seem long and a waste of time, but from my experience, I remember things easier after seeing and writing it a couple of times.
You could do it the old way and just read the script over and over, or you could write it on your arm ( kidding).

What did your acting teacher say was a good way to remember lines? Use whatever he or she taught you in class.
