You still have him on a wood product, even if you are using aspen. Switch to a recycled newspaper product such as carefresh. The oils in wood products cause respiratory tract problems in hamsters and other small animals. Plus, they are very dusty. Switch him off the bedding and make sure his cage is well ventilated, but not drafty. Keep him away from windows, direct sunlight, and vents in your house. If possible, put a drop of plain saline eye solution in his eye to flush it. If it's too difficult to hold him, don't bother. The stress from rough handling can really upset these little guys. Good luck!

Try Either Care Fresh, Critter Care, or Yesterday's News. We use the first 2 in our cages and it helped our rat's allergies. With a hamster that young he is susceptible to respiratory problems that can be associated with coughing, sneezing and eye infections. You should however see the vet and get some antibiotic eye drops for the hamster. We had to do that for the rat. He may have an eye infection from the allergic reaction to the aspen. Since it's Sunday, take a cotton ball or wash cloth dampened with warm water and gently wipe the eye, this will temporarily help until you can get him to the vet. We bought a Russian dwarf that we were told was blind in the right eye, well we were trying to look at her eye to see for sure and it was sealed shut with infection. My son gently pulled it open and brought her to me to check, I grabbed the antibiotic eye drops we have on stock and put them in. She's on her way to getting better. Not sure if she's actually blind or not, but we'll see later on that.

Its probably just his eye is sleepy and stuff. i had many hamsters when i was little and that sometimes happened. If you are worried it might be the bedding...try to shred newspapers and toilet paper and use that. They like that just as much and i have never had a hamster have a problem with that. So just keep trying new thing.

some hamsters can be sensitive to saw dust and wood shaving. A friend of mine had the same problem with her hamster and uses shredded paper throughout the cage instead. I hope this helps

You know when you wake up in the morning and your eye has "sleep" on it? Well, the same thing with hamsters. It's simply the sleep keeping his eye from opening. It will open it's self, or if you are worried about it, maybe try to open his eye VERY GENTLY with your fingers. He may bite if you try to do this though. If his eye becomes puffy or red, go see a vet. My hamster gets it too. It;s common. Don't worry.
