Hi Minx,

There is an old book called "The Looking Glass Heart" by Myron Brinig . If they had that book in mind, the answer might be "in the looking glass" or "in the mirror" :

http://www.amazon.com/looking-glass-heart-Myron-Brinig/dp/B0006AVG9I

If not try:

"Requiem for a Glass Heart" by David Lindsey

That would be a strong guess, but still a guess. For more, see:

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/l/david-lindsey/requiem-for-glass-heart.htm

Also try:

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/d/zoey-dean/heart-of-glass.htm

http://www.amazon.com/Glass-Heart-Sally-Gardner/dp/184255073X

But these two are not well known novels, as "Requim for a Glass Heart" is. If most of the others were classics, I don't think it will be either of these.
Good luck!
