What farah said is true. It was quiet the culture shock for me. The people were laid back, friendly & helpful usually and Alexandria was nice, but Cairo was dirty, crowded and noisy. People throw trash anywhere. That's not allowed where I come from. I saw a lot of poor people begging for money so take some small denominations b/c it's hard to refuse when you can see they need the money and who can refuse a child anyway esp when they're so cute. There's no crosswalks that I saw except in the center of the city around the american embassy area so be careful crossing streets. I guarantee you will never see traffic anywhere like in Cairo. They drive pretty much where they please & ignore the traffic signals. A nice quiet place we found there was at a place in the south called Mokatum Hills. You go up a big hill, and they have a little coffee shop there where you can sit and look out over all of Cairo, and on a clear day you can see the pyramids. Be sure to visit the light show at the pyramids at night, Mohamed Ali Mosque @ the Citadel, and the Egyptian Museum while at Cairo. Don't let them cheat you at Khan El Kahlili(spelling?) the famous tourist souvenir bazarre. Basically it was a very interesting trip but I don't like crowded cities even in my own country. I was very happy to get back home to USA & my quiet country life.
Oh yes...Ladies the men are handsome and very charming, be careful LOL

I visited Egypt several years ago and enjoyed it very much. Saw the Pyramids, Cairo and took an overnight train ride to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. Extremely interesting and the Egyptian people were quite friendly. I am not sure if anything has changed, but I would recommend the trip.

I have to start by saying that I am Egyptian, but I'm not biased. I believe that any country in the world has two sides, really; the side you see in travel brochures along with the rich and upscale neighbourhoods on the one hand, and the poor areas and slums on the other hand. That having been said, Egypt can provide some pretty amazing experiences and some unforgettable views if you know where to go. The downside that I always regret is that although Egyptians are very hospitable and kind, lots of them assume that it is fair to take advantage of tourists assuming that they can all afford it! The key word is always to bargain.

Just back recently from our 9 days back packing in Cairo and Luxor. Minus the hassels(minimum) from the tourist attractions(most in Khan El Kahlili).
Egypt is a nice and friendly country. We turned down the offer from a taxi driver infront of the Cairo Museum, who later flaged down the bus(2LE each) for us heading to Giza Pyramids.
Almost everything was cheap(a meal for 3LE) except for those overpriced attractions' tickets for tourists. As tourists, we are paying almost 10 time more then the locals.
Attractions in Cairo was very accessible due to it metro system and taxi. While Luxor is small town on the East Bank, you can even walk to the Valley of the Queen(an hour or so) from the ferry point at the West Bank(not recommended).
So stop worrying and head down to Egypt.
