No one really knows what the smartest animal is. One reason is because we dont have enough technology to tell. Also there are many different ways to measure smartness.
I think they are very smart. I'd have to say that they're probably one of the smartest land animals that I know of, because the big head they have, well, almost all of it inside is brain, so if you can imagine that, it gives you an idea of how big an elephant's brain is. If you could work with one you would see how smart they really are, and every one is different of course. There are some that are gonna be smarter than others.
The blue whale has a brain larger than any other creature on Earth. At 6 kg, the elephant brain is the largest brain of all LAND mammals.
Elephants are proficient tool users They often scratch themselves with sticks and break fences by piling logs—or even young elephants—over them. There are likewise many reliable accounts of elephants hurling objects. A 27-year-old bull, for instance, routinely concealed a rock in his trunk and hurled it at his keeper. Once the training of elephants in playing cricket or soccer is over, they “play the game with the enthusiasm of boys having a knock-up on the village green”
Elephants are able to recognize themselves in a mirror too.
Every animal has something they can do that no other animal can, so its really just your opinion of what the smartest animal is.

Technically, chimpanzees are the most intelligent, and are actually capable of communicating with humans in language. Not spoken, but sign... in fact, there is a mother chimpanzee at central washington university that has taught her young to sign (completely without human interaction). That is elegant proof of intelligence, most humans only communicate in one language and these chimpanzees speak chimp and human!
They are also known to discuss death, which essentially suggests consciousness humans have typically defined as humanistic in nature (we aren't as special as we would like to believe).
Also, as unbelievable as it might sound, there are studies suggesting that squid/cuttlefish and octopus may be as intelligent as dolphins.
