I see so far everyone has suggested and album from my favorite era, the second mothers incarantion from about '71-'74. From about the mothers live at filmore to about one size fits all. This era is definately his best group of musicians, george duke, chester thompson, tom fowler, ruth underwood, etc. This is when he was playing his best rock-jazz and awesome compositional puzzles. Two albums come to mind from this era which I think best chronicalize the era; Roxy and Elsewhere is ver interesting in that Zappa takes both live and studio material and mixes them together to create a audio masterpiece. But for straight live stuff, You cant do that on stage anymore vol. 2 This is a concert from Helsinki in 1974 which masterfully executes material from that entire period. Zappa's classically composed suite in this are unbelievable it seems impossible to think that theyre actualy being played live.
