They push or pull, actually, doing both depending on what is needed at the time.

Pushing gives greater control in tight areas. Bow line drag is better in rougher seas with more room. I have been towing boat for the marina I for for 4 years now. Having the control from the side makes docking a vessel in tow a piece of cake.

They PULL and PUSH, Ships coming into NY harbor must first notify "Ambrose" light tower (control center for NY harbor), and have a "Harbor Pilot" meet the ship. The "Harbor Pilot" takes over the control and command of the vessel, he radio's for "Tug" assistance when he gets close to the pier, Those big ships, and inexperienced captains, can destroy a pier if this is NOT done right.

They dont. They pull. I live in a busy harbour town and there used all the time. one might on the odd occasion be used to stabalise an off set loaded boat back into harbour from the side, but they almost always pull.
pushing from behind gives the tug driver no way of telling what is about to happen up front.

They do it for fine manuvering in ports for large ships. You will occationally see them pulling barges, or boats that have run aground. I'm sure that the reason they push has something to do with balance, and prop pitch that makes it easier for them to push instead of pull. But they do both.

I f they were pulling the barge or whatever and they stopped whatever they were pulling would run into them.
