Personally I've ruled out the three most popular answers: oil (as in "no blood for..."), Israel (although I think some of the necons and Likudniks may have been motivated by their ideas of Israeli interestat some point)at some point) and definitely not "Iraqi freedom," or WMDs, ideas that would be too laughable for words were they not so insulting to one's intelligence. So why are we there? If you can give me a credible argument even for the ones I've ruled out, I'll listen.

Jim H: I think I was quite clear that I would listen to and consider even opinions that I previously have found implausible. Except possibly for the WMDs/spreading democracy thing.

Kiss my Ring: It's clear Iraq had nothing to do with terrorism. Not even the Bushies are trying to claim that anymore.

This is a very good question. Why are we there?
The United Nations charter has a provision which was agreed to by the United States formulated by the United States in fact, after World War II. It says that from now on, no nation can use armed force without the permission of the U.N. Security Council. They can use force in connection with self-defense, but a country can't use force in anticipation of self-defense. Regarding Iraq, the last Security Council resolution essentially said, 'Look, send the weapons inspectors out to Iraq, have them come back and tell us what they've found -- then we'll figure out what we're going to do. The U.S. was impatient, and decided to invade Iraq -- which was all pre-arranged of course. So, the United States went to war, in violation of the charter. Making the war in Iraq an illegal war.
What can we do about it?

Whoever says oil is an idiot. There would be no point in going for oil because it would cost more to attack than the profit the US would make from any oil wells there. Also, most oil doesn't even come from the middle east, it comes from Canada. I would say it could have been Bush trying to fix all the problems caused when the weapons were given in the first place, or maybe because Bush really did want to help the people there. But if I'm sure about one thing, it's that this war is not about oil.

this could in simple terms be one in all a number of comments until now something is finalized. as properly, a troop withdrawal does no longer mean we are leaving Iraq fullyyt. we are able to nonetheless be in touch in practise Iraqi troops and operations against Al Qaida. Even the Democrats approve of that. we are unlikely everywhere for some years yet to return, that i'm able to assure you.

i think we are in Iraq partially because of our alliance with Israel. i mean, we are Israels only ally left, and as our role as "policemen of the world" that we earned through WW I and II, we are responsible to defend Israel. Another reason i think we're in Iraq is because of terrorism. yeah, its an old story, but we have always fought out of the country, we are the world power. we cant let the effects of war hit our economy; we run on oil, but thats a small reason why we're there. how would it look if we backed away from a fight? terrorist attacked us, we attack them. Iraq, mainly, has attacked our ally, we attack them. its kinda like a pride thing.if you're still in school, ask your world history teacher. that where i got some info from.i dont always trust the media. did this help? u probably already knew this.

Prior to 1972, a consortium of American, British and French oil companies owned all of Iraqs oil (the British Army conquered Iraq from Turkey during World War I and after the war the victorious powers sat down and carved up Iraq's oil resources among themselves).
In 1972, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein seized the Iraqi Petroleum Corporation from that consortium of foreign oil companies and took it over on behalf of the Iraqi government.
The Americans and British tolerated it at the time, because the Cold War was going on and they were not in a position to invade Iraq.
But, they always wanted to take it back and, after many decades, they've finally gotten the opportunity.
Iraq was an American and British ally during it's 8 year long war with Iran and the Iraqis thought all was forgiven about the oil fields - until Iraq tried to seize Kuwait, the world's second largest oil exporter and, after Saudi Arabia and Iraq, the world's third largest producer.
America and England attacked Iraq and, after the Iraqi Army was destroyed, imposed a 12 year embargo on Iraq that crippled their economy and killed 1.5 million Iraqis,
Desperate to revive Iraq's war and embargo ravaged economy, Saddam Hussein in 2003 set out to sell off the Iraqi Petroleum Corporation's oil fields to a consortium of French, Indian, Russian and Chinese oil companies, and for Iraq to be paid in Euros, rather than in US dollars (the standard currency for all international oil transactions).
This just wouldn't do, because it would have interfered with the monopoly that ExxonMobil, Chevron Texaco, Royal Dutch Shell, BP AMOCO and the oil traders of the New York Commodity Exchange and the Rotterdam Spot Market have on the international oil business.
So, they used their influence to get America and England to invade Iraq.
Since the public couldn't be told that this was a war to take back the oil fields that Iraq nationalized in 1972, the WMD story had to be sold to the media (even though all of Iraq's American and British built weapons of mass destruction were either destroyed by air raids during the Gulf War or were dismantled by Saddam Hussein in a failed bid to get the embargo lifted).
That's why America and England invaded Iraq.
