Is there a way to fix it so everything shows as bright/dark as intended or is it because my monitor is old?

So is there anything you/I/we could do?

Your monitor should have ways to adjust the brightness. contrast, vertical size, vertical position, horizontal size, horizontal position, etc. You may be able to go on line and find out how to do it. If you know how and tried and it hasn't made a difference then I would agree that a new monitor may be in your future...Good Luck...

It sounds like your monitor is close to giving up the ghost.

To verify, try taking your PC tower to a friend's and connecting to his (or her) good monitor. If it's brighter, it's time to buy yourself a new one.

even if it truly is a CRT then the project is the severe voltage ability furnish. even if it truly is an liquid crystal exhibit then it truly is the inverter, CCFT, or undesirable capacitors. both way, it sounds like you are able to be procuring for a clean one. someone could pay about $20 for a dismal liquid crystal exhibit computer screen because they are frequently repaired.
