The gasket material lining the space between my 2000 Saturn LS's hood front and the frame came off. I'm a car maintenence dummy but I don't want to spend a bunch of money on this car I'm replacing soon. If it's a vital part or it's loss will damage the car, I'll do what I must. Please advise. Thanks!

The only bad thing I can think of is it would allow water to come in and get on top of the motor, possibly causing an electrical problem, such as arcing of plug wires or computer sensors.

This probably wouldn't be a big factor, but it's possible. After all, plenty of moisture can blow in through the radiator. The rubber may be there just to eliminate wind noise through the crack in the hood.

I disagree that any paint damage could occur. The inside of the engine compartment is painted with the same paint as the exterior, so that makes no sense to me. (My shop paints cars as well as general repair)

Bear in mind, though, that car makers don't put anything on a car without a purpose!! they'll do ANYTHING to save a penny or two!

If you still have the gasket, you can probably get the little plastic fasteners that hold it on and re-attach it yourself.
