Forget that the computer is a laptop. Apart from some minor hardware differences (such as the battery, and the different classes of mobile processor and graphics units etc) a laptop is just a PC, the same as any other, and backing it up is limited only by the software on it, and your ability to use the software.

You should be able to create a disc-spanning image of your hard disk relatively easily using Windows Backup, which comes included with most Windows installations, however note that this will take quite a few DVDs (or even more CDs), as it will image the ENTIRE hard drive, even the empty space.

You will then (with the help of a boot disk) be able to install this to about any computer, although you may wish to use a similar sized hard disk to ensure there's no problems.

My laptop (a Packard Bell) has some protection built in against you installing Windows onto another PC. It knows your hardware and knows your computer well, and as such Windows will not allow you to install it on another PC. No Windows discs came with the computer, as there is a separate (hidden) hard drive partition holding the Windows files should you need to reinstall.

well you could make a backup disk with any backup software utility, but if you back up total system, software and all, you must have a second license for all of the programs to put it on a second laptop.

yeah of course.
If your idea is to clone a laptop info [including OS] you'd be better of with 'ghost' from symantec.
