i think people buy them without realising how big they can get and plant them for screening purposes, it upsets the neighbours cos it blocks their light, a bit like having a tall guy in front of you at they movies

You're right, they do look nice, but they are rarely planted in the right context. One of their virtues is that they are quick growing, another is they provide a dense screen, often a varying yellow-to-green through the year. These are also the main defects.
They can only be planted where that type of evergreen, with that coloration and density - and that speed of growth - can look best. Unfortunately there aren't many sites, especially in tiny overcrowded England and Wales, where that can happen. Even when you do find a suitable place for them they need a lot of TLC to keep them looking good. But their density and speed of growth provides good cover for small birds, and just one of the monsters manages to hide completely the awful extension the people behind my garden have built, thank heavens.

they are nice if they are kept cut n trimmed,they do however take all the moisture out of the ground and u r unable to plant anythink within 3 feet of them as nothing grows,good for bird nesting tho and to keep me employed as a tree feller

its just that they grow and grow and can ruin house foundations
