As long as you have a good reason then it should not be a problem. The length of the visa may not be what you desire, but getting one for a visit is not too hard.

I don't quite know the probability of getting a Visa from Nigeria, but I have gotten mine from the Philippines. (to stay)
It's not impossible, it's just harder now because of the restrictions they've been adding.

(To stay as an immigrant) I do know, you're more likely to be able to get a visa if you can speak (not just) basic english and have a high education.
If you have family in the US, you could get them to petition you.

(To go to school) I think you'd have to have high grades and stuff to show that you can stay in America and focus on school.
