I was at a game yesterday, a team got a free kick, and a player took it before the referee had blown the whistle. He got booked, and as he already had a yellow, was sent off. This seemed totally ridiculous to me, as I have always believed a free kick should be a free kick, not a chance for one team to reorganise their defence - despite supporting Arsenal, I saw nothing wrong with Man U's goal against Lille. Is there actually a rule laid down by FIFA about taking FKs too quickly, or is this another 'referee's discretion' thing?

As a Referee myself,I always say to both teams before a game.
"OK lads! If you want to take a quick Free kick,I don't have a problem with that...But please don't come whinging to me if it goes 'Pear shaped!...I won't be interested! ...on your head be it!
If I tell you to wait(which I shall do by pointing at my Whistle and saying firmly'Wait!'),then that's exactly what you must do. If you don't,it's a caution.
'Keeper,if you see me getting out of the way rapidly, that means a Free kick will be taken in the next couple of seconds.

The rules stipulate that the player can take the freekick as soon as the referee has indicated that he is ready for play to continue. This maybe in the form of blowing the whistle or by a simple discreet conversation. As per the MUFC freekick/goal of a couple of weeks ago.

Technicall yes, if the referee classes the actions as dissent. The referee can order the player to wait until the whistle. A bit petty to give someone a second yellow for it though!

Never! If so then the goal Henry scored against Chelsea or Giggs against Lille would not be allowed but they would get yellow cards instead.

This is part of the game where you need to take advantage of the opposition side when their are taking long to get ready.

Thanx!

no u cant may b he got booked 4 dissent having 2 retake it. then the opposing team shud have been given a free kick 10 yards further upfield if the ref was doing his job coorrectly which i doubt they r all arrogant and useless

No its not. The ref will simply call the play back and ask for the freekick to be retaken. FACT
