think it's intended to be pretty timeless. Have you ever been to Idaho? Not much changes in the small towns up there. It could be any time between 1990 or so and now.

the movie is supposed to be based on present day nowhere, and to make it SEEM like that, the directors gave it an '80s feeling. an estimation of the exact year would be around 2001-2002.
