if you're visiting for pleasure, come to Lakewood/Hollywood Santa Monica in east dallas. it's a historical district with natural beauty and a great community. try the great restaurants like Kitchen 1924 and the boutique shops like Talulah Belle, or Blow, the salon run by friends of mine. Lakewood's a great area.
if you're looking for nightlife, go to Deep Ellum. deep ellum is absolutely the best for live music, great food, and -if you like this type of thing- tattoo parlors. i mean, they're everywhere. anyway, the live music is great. check out the blind lemon and the Gypsy Tea Room. i saw some great bands at the Gypsy a few years ago. always a blast. and if you want to see unsigned bands, go to The Door. my friend's band, Socially Unsound, plays there sometimes. have fun!

Oak Cliff is NOT that bad. Being one of the first innercities, it's a bit old and outdated (lived there for 28yrs.) Can't say much about East Dallas or Pleasant Grove but from what I hear, I wouldn't go. Duncanville/Cedar Hill/Desoto are okay but not really nice. Try to stay around Grapevine, Las Colinas and North like Plano, Frisco. Hope we didn't scare you off. LOL!

OMG whatever you do DO NOT visit Oak Cliff, Pleasent Grove and East Dallas. Those are the roughest areas in Dallas. If you are looking to move here then you want to stay somewhere north of Dallas but if you are visiting then you want to go to downtown Dallas. I live here so I think of Dallas as boring but thats just me.

Good neighborhoods in Dallas are Lewisville, Flowermound, and Grapevine. Stay out and i will only warn you once stay out of Oak Cliff and Duncanville. Stay out of Oak Cliff!!! If you have to go there do not get out of your car and try not to stop your car if possible.

People say all the time not to go to Oak Cliff, but there are some areas of Oak Cliff that are nice. I'll just say don't go to Oak Cliff after dark, don't go to East Dallas, period.
