I was watching the movie Kingdom of Heaven. (it take splace during the middle ages) In this one scene, a group of soldiers were attacked and there was an African American man fighting with them. Were there really black soldiers in Europe during the Middle Ages? Or did Hollywood just do that?

The Blacks would have been Moors from what is now Spain and North Africa. They were Muslim but had little or nothing to do with the Saracen Muslims , Middle Eastern Arabs. One or two may have fought with the Christians as they were closer to the Europeans than to the Arabs but I wouldn't put money on it.

While Kingdom of Heaven is a good movie I wouldn't place to much on overall authenticity. They got the ruthlessness of the war down and the general attitudes about Arabs and the Christians most of it was pure Hollywood.

African Americans in the middle ages? What?

There was no America then. Political correctness kind of tied you up?

The Moors fought in Spain, Italy, Turkey, the middle east. Many migrated out of Spain to Europe. They were called Moors or Africans. ANd yes they did fight in Europe. They also painted, carved, farmed, worked cattle. Just not very many of them.

They wouldn't have been African Americans, but they would have been Africans. The Moors, after all, controlled much of Spain before being driven out in 1492--and the Moors were from Africa. Islam has, from the very beginning, not discriminated amongst the races, and many African regions reverted to Islam in its Golden Age, which roughly corresponds with the Dark Ages of Europe.

Well, there were black soldiers in South-East Europe (Serbia, Greece,Sicily..) but they were brought there by Ottoman Empire. As for Christian states, let`s face it, they weren`t tolerant to different races. :-((( As for Hollywood....their imagination and political correctness is beyond any understanding.
