I think a lot of people on here are confusing Queen Mary I of England (Mary Tudor, Elizabeth I's half-sister) with Mary, Queen of Scots.

Mary I was known as 'bloody Mary' because of all the protestants she had killed. She was most certainly not beheaded though, she died of natural causes and was succeeded by her half-sister Elizabeth who famously said "I will not make windows into men's souls" when her advisers tried to get her to start persecuting Catholics.

It was Mary, Queen of Scots who Elizabeth had beheaded, pretty much only when she was pushed so far that she had no other choice, she had managed to hold off and keep her alive for many years - against the wishes of her advisors - until Mary plotted with the Duke of Northumberland, among others, to have Elizabeth killed so that she could seize the throne of England.

Queen Mary I of England (18 February 1516 – 17 November 1558), also known as Mary Tudor, was Queen of England and Queen of Ireland from 6 July 1553 (de facto) or 19 July 1553 (de jure) until her death.

Mary, the fifth monarch after Jane Grey and before Elizabeth I of the Tudor dynasty, is remembered for returning England from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. To this end, she had almost three hundred religious dissenters executed; as a consequence, she is often known as Bloody Mary. Her religious policies, however, were in many cases reversed by her successor and half-sister, Elizabeth I (1558–1603).

The persecution of Protestants earned Mary the appellation "Bloody Mary" although many historians believe Mary does not deserve all the blame that has been cast upon her. During Mary's five-year reign, 283 individuals were burnt at the stake, twice as many as had suffered the same fate during the previous century-and-a-half of English history, and at a greater rate than under the contemporary Spanish Inquisition. Several notable clerics were executed; among them were the former Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer, the former Bishop of London Nicholas Ridley and the reformist Hugh Latimer. John Foxe vilified her in his Book of Martyrs. Spanish ambassadors were apparently aghast at how the English reviled her and at the jubilation and celebration of the people upon her death.

Mary did not have many successes; she was, however, known for her "common touch". She would wear a country's national dress when meeting its ambassador, and many of those who waited upon her personally later expressed great love and loyalty to her.

She was called bloody Mary because she was a catholic monarch who enjoyed burning protestants at the stake.

However, in comparison with her sister Elizabeth I who followed her she was actually reasonably humane. Elizabeth had many more catholics hung, drawn and quartered because of their faith than Mary had protestants burned for theirs.

However, since Mary we have not (officially at least) had a catholic monarch and therefore the protestant establishment view her persecution of fellow protestants as being particularly vile. Hence the nickname.

Her only real achievement apart from murdering people for their religious beliefs was losing Calais to the French.

Thankfully we have now abandoned religion and all its hatefulness in the United Kingdom!

Bloody Mary, otherwise known as Mary Tudor the First of England, was called that long after her death just 5 years after she began her reign in 1553. She tried to bring England back into the Roman Catholic fold, and had many people executed who wished to adhere to the newer Church of England's anticlericism. She is most famously the sole living child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. She was bastardized after Henry divorced her mother against the express command of the Pope. He married Anne Boleyn and that marriage led to his second living heir, Elizabeth I. Anne ended her life short a head, and Henry married Jane Seymour who finally bore him the much desired male heir. Princess Mary's greatest loyalty was to her mother, although she loved and heartily feared her father. When Henry died, his son Edward inherited the throne. When Edward died, after 9 days of a Protestant puppet Queen, Mary won her throne. Her marriage to Philip of Spain was childless and her sister Elizabeth succeeded her.
