One quality is that they work with itunes, which is the gold standard of MP3 software. You can import any sound or video file into itunes for transfer to your ipod.

Another quality is that you can get peripherals, like a microphone and different speaker systems. I even have an alarm clock on mine.

Deficiencies - it's quite fragile and not waterproof.

Another deficiency - the instructions are skimpy.

The Ipod Nano..
It has great sound quality and is really thin. The screen is very small. My mom has one and the screen looks like it is about 1 inch. They have different Ipods. They have them without screens too which is the Ipod shuffle. They have the Ipod video which is about 300$>> The Ipod Nano doesnt play videos but it has games. I have the Sandisk Sansa E250. It has a Screen larger than the Ipod Nano. The Sansa plays videos unlike the Ipod Nano or Ipod Shuffle Well, I don't think it plays videos.. I don;t know that one. The Sansa is way cheaper and you can get it at walmart just like the Nano. The Sansa is a bit thicker too. About 2 1/2 Ipod Nanos on top of each other. The Nano and the Sansa E200 series can view photos and as you know play music. The NANO has games on it and the Sansa doesn't. Personally I like the Nano's thinness and the fact that the Sansa plays videos. Well, Hope I helped
