My wife and I have recently purchased a New Home.

We currently have nothing but dirt in our backyard.

We are thinking about trying Fake Grass as an alternative to Real Grass.

I am writing this question to find out others who have a fake lawn and how they like or don't like how it looks and how long it lasts.

Thank you in advance for your time and comments.

Regards,

Dirty Backyard

There are lots of alternatives to lawn grass depending on your planned use.

You can expect the wear to be about the same as carpeting, and in much the same way the life expectancy is dependant on use.

You aren't saving much on maintenance given the required cleaning.

If your concern is temperature, it is cooler than rock but a lot hotter than grass.

If it sees a lot of traffic preventing grass to grow, you are concerned about the temp of rock, etc., and you want to maintain it as an open space, then it makes sense. Otherwise, any of the other landscaping alternatives is preferable, requiring the same or less maintenance and ultimately cheaper.

Fake Grass is not the astro turf of yesterday year. We have EverLast Turf installed in our backyard and LOVE IT. 10 Year Warranty and a 25 year life expectancy. They are located in Orange County (949/690-3700)

They use it in sport venues. One thing is you will never have to mow it. Grass is the easiest thing to grow. Scatter the seeds down in the fall and wait until spring. It will sprout or do it in the spring but it must be kept well watered. Once it starts it will spread and fill in all the bare spots.

I'm not sure about how it performs, I guess you blow it off or vacuum it. They have this stuff that is grass seed and fertilizer in one and they SPRAY it on. It works good too. Easy and less expensive than sod. They use it at the college I work at. I don't know the cost though. Good luck!
