Bad design in advertising is the same as bad design in manufacturing. It misses the point or fails to get its message across. To often you see adverts in which you need to struggle to make a connection between the illustration and the message. If the connection is too vague or irrelevant that is often a result of the artist either expecting something obvious to him or her to be equally obvious to everyone else or just being unable to stick to the point.
A good example was on 'The Apprentice' USA version with Donald Trump when one of the contestants insisted on offering his idea for a slogan on a Lamborgini campaign, against the wishes of his teammates. In the meeting with the distributor he coudn't hold himself back and blurted it out anyway, "Smooth as Silk". It was, as expected, shot down with a curt "no!" by the distributor, understandably enough. It is too vague, could be applied to any machine, lots of textiles, food products etc. It said nothing specifically identifiable with Lamborgini and at that level of product, a bland irrelevant slogan is not enough.

Wow, trhis is an interesting quedstion and I doubt anyone can answer it here. However I'll have a go. Since an advert has a specific point it is very easy to judge how effective it has been. Irespective of any artistic merits. The two are often confused.
Good graphicdesign, when it works goes unnoticed yet does its job. Good illustration tells a story with grace, economy and richness. In all cases, time will tell.

do not trouble about the money you'd be making. at the moment i'm ending my pictures layout significant, besides the undeniable fact that, I doubt i'd be continuing that route because it truly is no longer my interest. i'm taking a year off to easily imagine and make certain what i visit do, and that i'd be operating as a picture dressmaker to make certain if it truly is as undesirable as i concept it became. Now once you're already drawing, goofing round in photoshop or regardless of the truth that, and also you recognize that you want it and each little thing that orbits it, then flow ahead. in the different case, do not difficulty. each and each of the individuals i understand who've succeeded in picture layout are those who breathe, eat and sweat picture layout. I used to clutter round round with it, it truly is a cool activity and all, yet i does no longer manage to make a residing off it, specially because of continuous stress (tight cut-off dates), the superficiality of it, being the customer's "slave" etc. Now on the efficient aspect, the activity is distinct so that you get to study truly some diverse topics (more suitable or a lot less interesting), and also you boost your creativity. To sum it up, if you're actually not gifted, everyday, are not into the completed company way of existence and/or don't have the interest, do not difficulty. in case you have a good time with it as we talk and do artsy stuff on your spare time and characteristic been doing it continually (which I particularly have, yet discovered it truly is only a activity), flow ahead. My classmates that excel contained in the area are picture layout nuts who do not flow out to activities with us and stay at school all day doing that variety of issue and that i'm particular they are going to do effective and get reliable funds.

Offensive to the public, bad color schemes, poor taste in symbolism (like a graphic of a tooth to represent a wall, or something). Hmm, lack of originality. Hope some of that helps your brainstorming process.

Difficult to follow, can't figure out the meaning, glaring color choices, and re: websites also bad when you can't find/navigate to what you're looking for.
