I have a 1993 Nissan Quest and the fuel door no longer latches. I have tried repeatedly pushing the release but it won't loosen. It seems the latch on the car side of the mechanism is the problem, the male part that comes out to latch the door won't come out. I have tried pushing in back in to loosen it and tired gently to pry it loose but no luck. Any suggestions?

Unforetuneately I haven't actually seen one of these doors close up, but I am guessing there is something you pull inside the car, that is attached to a cable, that is attached to this male clip, and a spring to make it close.
If it isn't a broken spring in the latch, you might be able to loosen dirt or rust with WD-40. Spray the male thing really good where it retracts and try to move it back and forth and spray some more.
If that doesn't work, you probably need a new mechanism

Usually, inside the car, over the rear wheel area, under the moulding/carpet cover-you will find a latch control. It may be stuck in the open position. You should be able to gently push on that to get it to work again.
This happens in my car, although it is a Volvo.

Another idea is to find the manual release usually behind the carpeting in you trunk and pull that a few times also lube that
