Well before I got my tattoo, I consulted with all my friends who had already had work. Look at their tattoos and see if you find the work quality or not. If there are some your really like, look into where and who did the tattoo for them. Once you have determined a good place to go to, call and set up an appointment. Usually you can consult with the artist before the actual tattoo and tell them what you want. They may be able to draw something freehand or design the tattoo based on stencils found in the shop. Depending on how large the actual tattoo is, how much detail is in it, and who does it will affect the price. I say go prepared to drop $500 or more. Maybe you might be surprised and it will be less!

I think the question is more about having a tattoo, rather than what it should be! Yes body art can be wonderful, but needs to be approached with thought. Do you really want to mark yourself for life. I suppose you need to consider where you have it applied. You say very subtle. Is there anything subtle about a tattoo? Is there anything subtle about the written word on our bodies? Maybe consider their names in another language! Cant see how names can be incorporated into a Celtic design.
Just thoughts, average cost in North of England about £70 -120, depends on the craftsman. Consider it carefully, once there it is very difficult, expensive and painful to have removed. Think about changes to you own body, so think where you have it placed. I'm not trying to put you off. But consider deeply. Many people have revised body decoration as a modern fashion. Maybe the answer is to try one for a while, mehidi, henna as the Asia's use for weddings might be the answer.

Ask someone who's had it done. word of mouth is the best advertisement. I had mine done in Lanzarote two years ago by an English guy; it cost 40 euro; he invited my partner and son in to see it being done, the place was spotless.
You want somewhere clean with a friendly face. Celtic designs are great, usually fairly complicated though; and this will influence the final price. It's the intricacy of the design as well as the size that determines price. mine was fairly straightforward - a unicorn. Go girl!

I am glad that I can answer this question . If I may say I have a tattoo and I don't regret it but at the same time 40 years later I wish I didn't' have one its now all discoloured and ugly . I have learn ed to live with it . At the time I wanted to belong like the rest of everybody . Just think about it and seriously and check out those who have them and be truth full to yourself "do you really need one "

you say your forty and fabulous, you won't be after getting a tacky Celtic tattoo. If you want to do something special to honour your children why not try doing something permanent but not on your body, plant trees and put plaques on them with their names, create an original work of art using their hand and foot prints, you can buy plaster of Paris in hardware store and cast their hand and foot prints, the kids can paint them with gold or bronze paint. If you are good at sewing make a quilt with bits of their childhood clothes and photocopies (onto cloth) of family photos.
I not against tattoos but personally i think there are better ways to celebrate your heritage and children. However if you are adamant to go ahead with it make sure you find a tattoo artist with talent, there are some awful ones out there and there are some real talented artists, make sure you have a good look around and find one whose work you adore.

I don't like tattoos they look cheap, why ruin your skin. When you get older and your skin loses it elasticity the tattoo will go all wrinkly! But if you must have one, why not go to your local tattoo parlour but make sure they are insured and used sterilised tools. They will be able to advise you better.

Find your local Tattoo studio in the phone book and just pay them a visit....most studios have several portfolios of their work, they'll be happy to advise you.
Most studio's welcome your own designs it can be a nice change from doing the same old thing. Prices will vary according to size, design and work involved.

Tattoos are not subtle, they are trashy.
And Celtic ones are the worst, every chav in the country has one, usually on the base of the spine.

go for it, tatoos are fab and sexy. celtic tats are beautiful. i have three tribal ones, just remember tatoo's are not for christmas thay are for life. so be sure. they are not that expensive in relation to the fact that you'll have it forever.make sure your totally happy with the position of the tatoo also.thats important, ie that you can still wear all types of clothing and not think its visible. when you get used to that one, you'll gradually get more visable ones. good luck with it.
