Is there an etiquette I should follow?

Here are a few tips I used:

1. Check http://www.salary.com/smallbusiness/layoutscripts/smbl_solutions.asp
see what the average pay is in your field and use that for leverage.

2. Log all of your mail function as well as any processes or areas you have improved on. Such as reducing task times and saving the company money. Share your history with the company (especially if you've been there a while and there is a high employee turn around.

3. Schedule a meeting with your boss and present all these things. Unless the company is going through financial difficulty, then I'd wait.

4. If you have an annual review, that would be an excellent time to bring up all the hard work and dedication you put into your 9 to 5.

I would suggest asking your boss to set aside some time for you during the day or later in the week for a meeting. Then I would go in and discuss the fact that you want more money. Be prepared though, tell him why you believe you deserve a raise i.e. projects you have completed, unpaid overtime, and have information to back it up. Tell him you think you are a very big asset to the company and really enjoy working there but unfortunately you do not feel you are getting enough compensation for it. No matter what though, it could go either way, if you ask him or her in an intelligent manner with back up data to support your claim, they might appreciate you having the courage to ask and being prepared to ask. On the other hand, your boss may think you are being paid enough and might tell you his or her reasons why you do not derserve the raise. If this happens, thank them for their criticism and tell them you will take the advice. Either work on it to increase your chances for a raise in the future or try to find a new job.

go with a plan.
tell him not why you want or need a raise. but the qualities that you possess that make you deserving of a raise.
why are you important to your company?
what are your qualifications?
stand tall and firm.

make it clear that you are important to his job and you can't work for free. say why you need the money and then give him some time.

your job could be like 10x better than most with half the pay.

that would suck
