Is asking for an argument against a "straw-man" position really a question or just a invitation for a lot of chatting against the supposed opposition?

The reason is what heck are you talking about?

Straw man or ad homin, take your pick, although it does seem particularly bad today.

I look at it as people trying to grab their 15 minutes of non-fame on a chat board. Kind of dismal, isn't it?

Clearly that kind of question is not an invitation to rationally debate the issues.

I've been tempted to ask questions but honestly, I would want some thoughtful, considerate answers. From what I've seen on answers, conservatives aren't willing to be receptive to another point of view. I think it's important to be knowledgeable on both sides. Some just want to vent and blow off steam or are looking for someone to justify their point of view. The bottom line is, we're not going to change anyones opinion and we're not going to change the world on answers. If people just want to chat, go to a chat room.

The fact that it leads with why technically makes it a question. Now whether it is a good question or not is open to debate.
