If it's unfertilised then it is HAPLOID (n chromosomes)
When it is fertilised by sperm, it becomes DIPLOID (2n chromosomes)

The egg or the sperm, when not fused with the other, is always in a haploid state. When they fuse, a diploid zygote is formed.
