Diesel engines have a tendency to last twice as long as their gasoline counterparts for a few reasons.
Diesels and Gasoline engines are basically the same components with a few exceptions...
Diesels typically have less moving parts than their gas counterparts, this means less friction and less components that are exposed to wear and eventual failure.
Powerstrokes if going with a 6.0 do get worse mileage than the 7.3L, a re-flashing of the 6.0L basically went against the justification of going with the 6.0L in the first place.
Maintenance? powerstroke doesn't need sparkplug changes, whereas the 4.6-5.4 tritons will eventually need them at approx 60k miles. Gas engine will need O2 sensor changes whereas the powerstroke doesn't use these sensors...
it is mostly smog equipment that will make up the difference in maintenance.
Oil changes are also not as frequent with the diesels....

Diesles generally last longer because they only rev to about 4000 rpms while a typical gasoline engine reves to 6000 rpms. The cruising rpm is also lower than the cruising RPM for a gasoline engine. Ford Diesels have lasted over 300,000 miles without engine problems. The Ford diesel has a recommened oil change interval or 7500 miles, while the gasoline has a recommended oil change interval of 4000 or 5000 miles. With the diesel, i would replace the factory air filter as soon as you buy it and replace it with a K&N. Then i would clean the K&N filter every time the oil is changed. Diesels suck a lot of air, so a clean air filter makes a big difference.

You can put 500,000 miles on a diesel. Dont have problems with a good diesel.
