HI-, There is a couple of things that can make the car run badly, check your ignition leads & points, Fuel starvation if its running week it runs withe a caugh & a splutter, timeing out will make it do the same, iff i was you i would put new plugs points & leads in her & see how you go on if it still does caugh & missfire check the fuel setting screw the mixture screw all the way in then turn it back 1 1/2 times whyll the engine is running or try this before you change the plugs & points, good luck,D.F;

One problem these carburetted ford engines suffered with was an air ratio problem. If you remove the carb and turn it upside down you will see an air screw in the bottom which may well have worked loose. Screw it in and see if it helps. You may have to get it running and then have a professional set it up properly if this is the problem.

Otherwise, if this is running the wasted spark system then you may have a faulty coil pack. Idle the engine and remove the plug leads one at a time. If the removal doesn't affect the engine whatsoever then you have found the problem. Swap the leads around to make sure it isn't them thats causing the problem, the misfire will follow the lead if its faulty.

sounds like you're looking in the wrong area but it does depend where the exhaust is broken. if its on the manifold then it can cause a few problems but if its doing what you say it is, first thing to do is replace the plugs and h.t leads in case they are breaking down somewhere, if its got points and a dizzy give it a good clean then after that if you still get no joy check the fuel system for blockages.
because the cars are old now it can only be one of those problems. also you might want to check your dip stick for the tell tale 'cream cheese' for signs of a head gasket leak.

good luck!

Yes.
A badly blowing exhaust robs the engine of some of the back pressure it needs to run smoothly. ( I take it the car ran fine before the exhaust broke?) The fact it's an auto will only make it worse.

yes its the exhaust its taking in too much air. if you wish to see if im right put an exhaust bandage over the broken exhaust and it will run normal if you can get it air tight. but its easier to change the exhaust

you make it difficult to make objective suggestions by not stating what engine you have. if it's a cvh the hyd tappets may be suspect basic diagnostic rules apply check valve clearances them peform a compression test followed by a cylinder leakage test to determine the condition of the engine and eliminate burnt out valves and broken piston rings them look for other faults.
