I have a pretty old blender that doesn't seem to chop ice as well as it used to. Can I sharpen the blades or should I just replace the blades and/or the unit?

Yes, almost anything made of metal can be sharpened. Here is how to do it. Take the blade out and run it along the stone at the same angle that is already there, as if you were trying to slice off a thin layer of your sharpening stone. Then turn it over and do the other side. Be careful, I have been sharpening knives and stuff for over 30 years and I still get cut every now and then. I use what is called a "double stuff" ceramic stone that used to be made by Spyderco, but I have no idea if they are still in production or not, as I have had mine for 17 years.

I had an old one too and it used to say to run a few ice cubes and a little water and that should sharpen them up. but if not I would replace the unit for more effective use of your blender.

Sure you can. You need a small stone or a round ceramic sharpener. Follow the edge that is already there. When you get the nicks out of the edge that's about as sharp as you need it. You don't have to get it razor sharp.
