this brownish discharge barely lasts a day, and I had it before i even started my period, so i am pretty sure that the discharge isn't my actual period

In the first year or two after I started my period it was very irregular. I had it one month and didn't have it for another 3 or 4. Some people have this problem, and for me it became more regular as I got a few years older. If it doesn't or it's really bothering you, ask your mother to schedule you an appointment with a gynecologist. He/she would be able to solve your problem. Hope that helps!

When I first started, I was 10 years old. I had no earthly idea what was going on. I bled for 5 days, I knew what it was after the blood turned to red & not brown. And then each month after that, all I got was a brownish discharge, so I never knew when to prepare myself. My cycle was like this until I was 11 years old and then I had it every month. I would recommend that when you start to feel the bloating, cramps etc., to take some midol or pms meds to ease the pain and you may want to wear liners around that time just in case you do more than brownish discharge. I hope this helps.

Don't worry during the first year of menstruation your body is finding its balance. Its often takes months sometimes years for your body to regulate itself. Now is a good time to set up a doctor appointment with an OBGYN. In most areas you can find a planned parenthood which is a health organization who can answer any questions you may have about your body and its changes. Trust me its the best thing you can do.

BTW
I think its great you're a virgin!

um well margo i had a similar case with this, i got my first period when i was 9 n then i didn't get it for like almost 8 months later i started getting it i was experiencing a lot of cramps i was 10 at the time so my mom got worried and took me to a gyno who examined me by ultrasonic radar, and realized that i hadn't been getting my period, because i had a cyst, which is a blood clot which could have been dangerous if not taken care properly. it eventually dissolved with medication and no surgery was necessary!

so my best advice go get checked and don't me scared it's okai girls have also gone through this! well good luck!

usually in the first month of starting your period, it will be irregular. you usually settle into a cycle after the first year. the brownish discharge is your period. i usually get that at the begining of each period and at the end. its normal.
