They are sitting in the tree right outside my big window. There are about 4 of the tree. This tree is completely ugly for 3 seasons, until in the spring for about 1 week it has beautiful pink blossoms on it that are just breathtaking. But other than that, it is just an uly tree.

These birds have blackish/greyish wings, backs, and heads, while they have bright breasts. One of them has pink, another yellow, some brown, and another greyish.

I was thinking they were finches, but I am not sure. They are pretty small. I want to encourage them to nest in that tree, is there anythin I can do? Like leave breadcrumbs or strands or string for nesting materials? Any ideas?

Are they attracted to bread crumbs or do I need to go buy special bird seeds?

Our house was the very first in our neighborhood, so we always have a lot of animals in our neighborhood. Recently because of new development they have been running off, so I want to keep them around.

The yellow ones sound like goldfinches and the red one is probably a Purple Finch or House Finch. They will eat sunflower or thistle seed. They won't eat breadcrumbs. The more wild your yard is, the more likely you'll have birds nesting in it. Plant trees and shrubs, and have more native vegetation and less lawn.

You say one has some pink...might be house finches or purple finches. If so, these are seed eaters, and I recommend Black oil sunflower seed. Almost all birds will come to this kind of seed. But if you are about to make this an ongoing interest, get a feeder and some seed. Put out old bread, though, the crows and squirrels will come and their interest will make other birds aware that "something is going on" at your yard. Suet is another wonderful thing for attracting birds. I have woodpeckers lined up waiting for their turn. But chickadees, nuthatches, and other birds like suet too. You can get it in the grocery store.

If they have long, thin beaks, they are probably Nuthatches. Are all of them, even the different colored ones, the same size and shape? If their beaks are short and triangle-shaped, they could be Purple Finches and/or Gold Finches in their winter plumage. Finches love thistle seed and black oil sunflower seeds.

If they have plenty to eat, thay will stick around and make your back yard their home.

If they are finches, put out Thistle seed in a feeder. They go nuts for it.
