Check with your local library or bookstore. There are a lot of books out there that give the basics of sewing all the way to specifics of dress making. About the only one I remember the name of is "Sewing For Dummies" which is really good but by no means the only book.

If you start with easy or beginner patterns, they usually have really good instructions for early sewers. I know McCall's, Simplicity and Butterick all have easy versions for sale.
