i am setting up a new website and have just realised that i have alot of pages and was wondering if i need to buy more than one domain name? eg www.example.com/page1 www.example.com/page2
etc

you only need one domain name. the domain name doesn't have any qualities of volume. a domain name is simply an easy way for a person to remember the location of a website. If you have a huge site and it's starting to get slow, just upgrade your account. you can have all the pages you want like domain.com/1.html, 2.html, 3.html etc...

if you're talking about subfolders such as domain.com/folder1/ domain.com/folder2. It is up to you. just create the folder and stick documents into it.

The domain points to a server...

Links to/from/between pages on a single server only need a single domain...

In fact, you can use the same domain for multiple servers in a single domain by setting up subdomains like:
sub1.domain.com
and
sub2.domain.com

No, you would only need example.com I believe.

After that I believe you can put as much as your server can handle
