I heard people say 5 years, but this all depends on how much use it sees, and how it is taken care of.

If it was top of the line when you bought it new, like my Dell Inspiron 8100, it can provide good service even after 5 years. Average, I would say: 4 years, then it is probably outdated, but may still work perfectly.

I had a Dell latitude CPiA that lived for seven years. That thing was a work horse. Just recently replaced it with an Inspiron 1505, Love it. I have a Dell Precision M60 at work that's going on it's fourth year. That thing is a work horse.

Ours at my office will typically live about 3-4 years. Screens get damaged, hard rives go out, etc.
