I think being a housewife is respectable, I don't see why anyone would think less of a woman who decides to put most of her effort and energy into taking care of her family, and it takes alot of planning and organization to run a household it is not a piece of cake like some seem to think it is

It has been noted that the economy would be quite different if the work contributed by women as teaches, nannies, mothers, wives, housekeepers, cooks and secretaries were counted in the GNP!

Think of all that capital if those hours were logged and paid.

I think Ann Lander or Dear Abby wrote an article adding up the actual cost of hiring someone to do all that work for a year.
I don't know if you can find this online or in a book, but that might help your friend to realize how valuable that work is.

The world simply could not run if we had to pay for all that work.
That is why it is done on a volunteer basis.

Love is what makes the world go around. Money cannot pay for all the work that love has done to make daily life possible.

I know I have hired former SAHMs to work with me in many restaurants. They have proven to be dedicated, hardworking employees even if they must be taught some basic skills. Most already know how to wash dishes, chop veggies, etc. It's just a matter of teaching them efficiency, sanitation and portion control techniques.

I don't usually allow these types of employees to interact too much with customers however, preferring to keep them in 'the back of the house'. I want to make sure they are adequately socialized, so to speak, before unleashing them on the unsuspecting public. They've spent so much time in an insular world, I feel that is really the best policy while still honoring their unique skills as genuine job experience.

Before I went into culinary school, I worked in the computer industry. I only hired a SAHM IF she had enough of an education that I would not have to babysit each and every email she wrote, checking for misspellings, grammatical errors and lack of proper punctuation. Sadly, I hired only one in my 10 years in the computer industry. Hopefully this is because most SAHMs find their lives fulfilling rather than is a blanket statement about a decided lack of education on the part of all SAHMs.

I have heard them be referred to as Domestic Engineers.

I have also stayed home with my boy for two years and I will tell you that it is easier to go to work than to stay home.

It has been calculated that the work of a stay at home mom, when all added up, is worth $72/annually.

I have interacted with many women that chose to stay home and raise their children and they are bright individuals.

My mother for example, stayed home with us kids unitl I was 13 and my brother was 15. She began working at a paint store part time...and now she runs a whole corporate sector of a different paint company. She worked in the paint store for a year and was qucikly snatched up as a representative for another company.

Stay at home moms learn very valuable skills. They can multi-task, meet deadlines and organize finances. They have great time mangement skills and a great ability to weed out tasks that are inefficient.
