I've bought three different styles of trousers (grey, black and a dark sandy colour) for work, but am stuck for what to wear over a shirt on the top half. V-neck tops seem a bit frumpy, casual suit-style jackets seem a bit too casual, and I'm not quite ready for a navy blazer with blue buttons. Any ideas? Is it possible to wear suit jackets that aren't identical to the trousers, or is this a fashion disaster?

it really depends on what kind of job you have. if you're a lawyer or an accountant, or work in a similarly conservative environment, i would say that you should play it safe and go with either a matching jacket or nice separates on top. the salespeople at brooks brothers are really helpful, but places like banana or nordstroms. however, if you think you can play around a little, try to find a jacket in a check or other small, subtle print (maybe houndstooth?) that picks up on one or more of the colors in your trousers (ex. something in grey and black). this way, you can get more out of the blazer. oh, if you do decide to go with a patterned blazer, go with a matching dark solid underneath, so they don't compete and also so the pattern pops more. as for your dark khaki pants, maybe try a tweed, or something with texture that falls within the same palette.

DO NOT MIX SUIT JACKETS!!!! That is a fashion disaster.
v neck sweaters look good by purchasing a slimmer, fitted cut and pair them with nice tshirts underneath or a fitted dress shirt.
You can wear these combinations
Dress shirt, tie, lightweight sweater (v neck or cardigan)
Dress shirt, sweater
Dress shirt, tie, blazer
Layering t shirt, sweater
Dress shirt, sweater, blazer
Dress shirt, blazer
Just a dress shirt
But again never mix suit jackets-- you will look like you shop at the Salvation Army.
BTW, you can wear suit jackets with dressy jeans (ones without holes) as well as more casual blazers.
Check out www.bananarepublic.com for some layering ideas and you will see the combinations i listed above work quite well.

What Ho, Hmmmm.
Being a bloke, I probably can't help too much with ladies work garb. Whatever feels nice & looks OK in my book.
I did once wear my posh dinner jacket & a bow tie with matching pocket handkerchief to an office "dressing -down" Friday.
Jeans & sweatshirts around me !
Oh dear.
As long as the "boss" is happy, wear what looks good.
I like the little black nos., but then, I'm a bloke !
Cheers,
Bob.

I guess it wouldn't be too bad, but a little strange. Just stay away from the sandy colored one!
