A smarter thing to do is return the core system, and get yourself the premium with the 20gb hd included. Since you just bought the system, you could easily return it for a full refund. spending $40 on a memory card is just dumb when you could get the whole premium bundle for an additional $60

and if you can't afford another $100, then put of buying an xbox 360 until you have it because the hard drive is essential for future updates like iptv and new maps/weapons for games.

to answer your question, no you can't use a usb hd/memory stick as an alternative since microsoft don't want you messing with their system. Heck I can't even transfer my mp3 to my xbox 360 hard drive.

You need to get the 360 hard drive. It's a great way for MS to make money. Why should other companies make money off the 360? You could use your XBX to play your XBX games and your 360 to play your 360 games.

If you want to save your games, you can use the 360 memory card. But it will set you back about 35 bucks, and it's only 64 mb. If you had shell out that extra 100 bucks, you would have gotten a 20 gb hard drive, and you could play Halo 2 on the 360.

For now you can buy a 64MB memory card. This was one thing I didn't like too. I had to buy a hard drive.

A 64MB memory card costs $29.99
A 20GB hard drive costs: $99.99
