According to private sources, the number was over 1000, with more than 2000 wounded and Civil Surgeon Dr Smith indicated that they were over 1800 .The Punjab Government first asserted that 291 people were killed, but this figure was promptly challenged by the Allahabad-based Sewa Samity, which produced a list of 500 verified deaths, based partly on its work in aiding the injured and cremating bodies. An enquiry by Amritsar Deputy Commissioner F.H. Burton later raised the official toll to 379, broadly accepting the Sewa Samiti list but deducting 44 unknown rural bodies cremated by the organisation, and some alleged inaccuracies.

Nobody, General Dyer was only able to hit with bullets to cease their heart beat to physical death, but the souls of all those departed from Jallianwala Bagh aroused the whole Bharat to come together and live up to their expectations. They sacrificed their life to give us a bright future... casualties official 379, unofficial1,000 and as per civil surgeon 1800, does matter in quantity, but their quality of making the highest sacrifice for mother land, speaks volumes... As per Central Govt. records 379 persons were killed in Jalianwala Bagh on 13Th April.1919. However, as per Punjab govt. records the figure is 381.
