The size and charge of the nucleus.
Uses for radiation in experimentation.
Electrons in orbit around the nucleus.
The relative size of the nucleus compared to the size of the atom.
His students went on to discover atomic numbers and the neutron.

Rutherford discovered the neutron.He also was the father of neuclear chemistry. He did a lot and won the 1908 Nobel prize in chemistry.

In terms of radioactivity he defined alpha and beta radiation- Showed that alpha particles were equivalent to an He2+ atom and that beta particles were equivalent to electrons.
In doing this he also showed that the main mass of the atom resides in the positively charged nucleus and electrons existed in somewhere in the space around them as well as the existence of the neutron within the nucleus (this is what splitting the atom was, not actually slicing it up like I used to think!)
