My daughter just fell off the bed. Her lip is cut. Acutally, the part that attaches the upper lip to the upper gum appears to be torn. Is this something that will heal naturally, or should we go see a doctor ?

Hi
Just wanted to specify that we did call an ambulance and they came and everything is ok. We noticed after they left that this skin is cut. So, we're not going to run to the emergency room for this.

I cannot belive some of the over-reaction I have gotten here. Can you say "jumping to conclusions". Thanks to those of you who have offered insight, the rest of you clearly have mental problems.

I work in a pedi office and that part of the mouth does not need to be stitched. I don't know what the injury looks like but here are a few pointers. If the you cant stop the bleeding, if the lip is extremely swollen, if there is any damage to her gums, or any damage to her teeth such as discoloration or broken then you need to go to the er. You need to give her plenty of cold fluids (ice or popsicles if handy) to help with the pain. Also you need to give her Motrin (ibuprofen, which is a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory) for pain. BUT when in doubt call you pediatrician or go to the er. It is better to be safe then sorry, we can not see the injury so we can not asses the actual damage.

Get off the computer and take her to the hospital right away if you are in doubt.
It's better to err on the side of caution.

Additional comment:
It's good that she's okay but how dare you say anyone else has mental problems. By posting on this site a question about your child having a bleeding mouth injury and you cannot tell if it is serious or not definitely brings your parenting skills into question.

Stitches are not required for the frenulem(the skin that attaches the lip to the gums) The mouth heals very quickly. Just rinse her mouth with water after she eats or drinks. However watch for signs of infection. Oozing from the area, o/w continuous bleeding.

Take her to a doctor, if you want to be sure. It is much better to be safe, rather than sorry.
That being said:
If it isn't apparent that she needs stitches, she probabaly doesn't. As long as she isn't bleeding profusely, it shouldn't be too much of a concern. My daughter had the same injury, and she healed fine. Her doctor basically said there was nothing he could do. I'm assuming it is barely torn (if you say "appears to be torn"), and that being the case it will be fine.

I would take her in. I had that area surgically snipped as a child, and I had a mouthful of stitches. I was 7 or 8, but remember it being very painful, and having to take an antibiotic to prevent infection. Better safe than sorry - your doctor can determine better than anyone whether or not it needs stitches. Good luck!

Call the ER and ask them.. when my son fell in the tub.. his lip was bleeding badly and I called them to ask if I should take him in to get stitches and the ER Doctor said that if the cut is inside the mouth that they will not able to stitch it and it would stop bleeding before I got there.. and he was right it was stopped before I hung up the phone. And he said to try to put peroxide on it.. so that worked and he was fine. So when in doubt call them and ask. Good luck.

Are you serious? I can't believe you have taken the time to ask the question instead of getting her to ER. Do you realize that you are asking a bunch of strangers who have no experience in health care this question. GET HER TO THE DOCTOR. It could be serious. You seem like a very immature parent, with no parenting skills, and no concern for your child. After your done at the doctors, continue your way over to Child Protective Services and drop off your child, give her a good home, with parents that will actually care about their child, and give their child the love and attention when needed.

Whenever it involves a child, I think it is wise to get it checked out!! Unfortunately, NO one on here can SEE how badly your little girl is hurt.

Are there any nurses that live in your neighborhood or in your family? You can consult them first if you'd like. I'm sure they can help you and let you know if they think it needs stitches.

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE. I WAS WONDERING HOW IT WAS GOING WITH YOUR GIRL. WILL PRAY FOR HER! GOD BLESS HER. VERY SORRY FOR HER ACCIDENT. GOTTA' WATCH SMALL TOTS WHEN THEY ARE ON THE BED. EASY TO FALL OFF.

To be honest that is not a place that can be stiched if it's inside the mouth. Just give lots of cold water. Call your regular ped to ease your own worries.
