Please anybody, I left my laptop plugged into my wall circuit and had the power overload because I had too many appliances running at the same time. And I went to switch back on the electricity in my room and when I came back in the laptop had been playing music , but now was sputtering static very loudly and the screen was blank (nothing on there) and I tried to turn it off, and I could not turn it off. I finally took the battery out of it and put it back in and then it booted up fine and I am typing to you now on it.
How likely is it that I did serious damage?

Your laptop will not be damaged by a power cut.
It sounds like you laptop battery does not hold a decent charge and the laptop crashed.
The fact that it has booted up again shows it is OK but try switching off or disconnecting the wall supply while the laptop is on, it should have no effect on the computer as the battery will take over. If it shuts down then your battery needs replacing.
But rest assured no harm can come to the machine through the mains supply simply shutting off.

As your laptop seems to be working it is unlikely that you have damaged the hardware. Laptop power supplies are usually quite resilient and can operate between 110 and 240 Volts. However power surges and spikes could cause damage.
You may want to check that your battery is still charging or that the power light is working. If it isn't then the power supply may have blown and you are operating on battery.
If that is fine then I recommend that your carry out a scan of your harddrive incase any files may have been corrupted.
Keep an eye on your power supply over the next few days if you get a repeat of your symptoms then get the power supply checked out by a professional.

there may have been corruption to the files that where open at the time or any programmes that where running at the time check all of your software even if it means opening all of your programmes if there is corruption in a file or programme try running the disk defragmenter this may solve the problem the alternative for software is to uninstall and reinstall unfortunately you may not be able to fix files so deletion is about the only choice if the defrag' doesn't work. there maybe long term physical damage to your laptop again its worth getting it checked out explain what happened, after all it is better to be safe than sorry also if you find the underlying trouble before it gets out of hand it should save you money in the long run.

I don't think you did any damage. The voltage coming through the power supply is regulated, so there probably was only enough of a surge to confuse the software that was running at the time.
If your laptop runs fine now, it's probably okay.

Edward-------this should be a wake up call-----not only to you but to each and every one of us-------------get and use an UPS
(uninterruptable power supply)---------with these brown-outs and surges can do no damage since we are drawing the power from a constant and clean battery current instead of the wild and dirty house current that can and does ruin our computers---------my uncle is a real smart man and he says most computer problems stem from this 'unclean' current---he has these on all our pc's and we never have problems.

i'd problem extra about your overload - you does no longer care about your workstation if the homestead had burned down. replace your wiring and get extra wall sockets. Or better nevertheless reduce down on the skill you take advantage of. Your workstation is possibly ok, yet do you decrease back up your documents? faster or later your demanding force will die....all of them do. in case you have not copied your belongings you've lost it>

yor pc will have sorted its self. you may have got a message saying your computer has recovered form a serious error.if your pc is booting up ok then it is unlikely that on this occasion that you have done any serious damage. most pc's are protected and though it can be harmful it more often is'ent.
so dont worry and dont spend money you dont need to

Unlikely - as you would not be able to use again if you had.
But don't do it again - you might not be so lucky next time.
Get a power breaker too.
