No, a pregnancy test detects pregnancy not drugs.

I smoked some pot, drank a lot of beer, took Advil, am on the Pill, had sex, and had Chinese food for dinner. Can that affect my test results? No. There is no food*, no alcohol, no contraceptive, and no illegal or over-the-counter drug that can mess up your HPT results, and semen cannot affect the test. The only drugs that can affect pregnancy test results (in the form of a false positive) are prescription drugs that contain hCG (such as Profasi, Pregnyl, Ovidrel, etc.) They are prescribed for fertility treatments or other "female problems." If you are taking one of these drugs, ask your doctor how soon you can use a pregnancy test (different doses require different amounts of time to leave your system, so what works for one woman might not work for you.) *Food itself does not cause false results, but can affect how much urine you have and how dilute it is. Eating salty chips and drinking caffeine all day will result in more concentrated pee, whereas gorging on watermelon and ginger ale will result in lots of very dilute pee. Very diluted urine during very early pregnancy may result in a false negative. For best results, pee in a cup first and make sure your pee is medium to dark yellow.

actually they sort of can. They CANNOT cause a positive result. if it's positive, it means you're pregnant, the test is looking for HCG levels which has nothing to do with drugs. On the other hand, excessive drug use can cause lower than average HCG levels (another one of the reasons drug use causes miscarriages), so the levels may not be high enough to register on the test, giving a false negative when you actually are pregnant. The general rule with pregnancy tests is: if it's positive, you're defenitely pregnant, if it's negative, you could still be pregnant, wait a few days and try again.

Nope. The test is only looking for hcg, which is only found in a pregnant woman's bodily fluids. Drugs won't erase it and they won't add it. For the best results, take the test first thing in the morning, because your first morning's urine is most concentrated and you have the best possibility for accurate results. A negative is 95% accurate and a positive is 99.5%.

I'd be willing to wager that drugs can cause a negative result.

However, I don't think drugs will yield a positive result. It detects the pregnancy hormone, and if it shows up, chances are it is accurate.
