Bettas can do well with most any peaceful community fishes like livebearers, tetras, rasboras, corys and the like. Just avoid having two together or a male and female together.

depends on the size of your tank
don't go for any fish tankmates if your tank is smaller than 10 US gallons.
however you can consider snail tankmates if it's smaller than a 10, apple snails, zebra apple snails, plague snails like ramshorns. Ghost Shrimps can go in, but bettas sometimes see them as dinner!

if your tank is over 10 US gallons, you can consider fish, go for something peaceful that won't bother and stress out the betta, so stick to bottom-mid level fish, not top dwelling ones which is where the betta mostly hangs out. Also avoid anything nippy like most tetras and barbs, and anything brightly coloured like platys or guppies. and NOT other bettas! male OR female!

i've successfully kept corydoras (there's many types, research them if you decide on them) and otocinclus (for mature algaefied tanks only) with my bettas. if your tank is large enough you could also consider the smaller loaches like Khuli or Chain (NOT clown, they grow too big). African Dwarf Frogs can be considered as well, but they're very messy creatures so will need care and attention when feeding.

But whatever you keep depends on the bettas personality, some bettas will be accepting towards tankmates, others will get violent!

The link below is a topic on this subject.

We had a tropical tank with neons, angel fish, red tailed sharks, platties and siamese fighters ( a male and a female) the only fish that the male fighter bothered was the female (he ended up killing her) and he was fine with all the other fish.

From what I've read... Nothing too colourful, nothing that's known for fin nipping and nothing with long floaty fins that it might mistake for another betta. You can put them with females but "only" in breeding time. the size of your tank tells you how many fish should be in there anyway and I wish you the best of luck. Type the name betta into google it will come up with good sites which should tell you in detail (I'm usless with names sorry) and if in doubt, go to a proper aquatic shop with people who know what their talking about and can advise you on your individual circumstances. take care.

A Betta can go with many tropical community fish. Just make sure that the fish you put with it aren't known as fin nippers. Some fish will nip at the Betta's long fins. DO NOT PUT IT WITH ANOTHER MALE BETTA!

NOT a female betta. females can be kept with females, males can be kept with most non agressive tropicals that don't have flowy fins or look like another betta. however, males and females will fight. even mating is violent.

listen to the preson above about needing a 10gallon for other fish, and you'll need a 5gallon for things like snails or shrimp.

they can go with tetras, mollies, guppies! quiet a lot but never put 2 Siamese's fighters together because the stronger of them both will attack the other and kill it.

they are pretty solitary but you can put them with anything that is disinterested in them and doesnt look like them
so catfish, toothcarps (guppies killies platys)
stay away from tetras and mollies though they pick
also, african butterflies are good because they dont pick at other fishes fins

freshwater sole, most loaches are also great choice
ghost shrimp, grass shrimp, snails etc, are also ok

any non fin nippers anything smaller (not the same size as it will see it as a threat) . If you are going to breed you will need two females as he will kill one to prove how virile & strong he is
