if you get zapped (shocked), and the electricity is stronger than the electrical impulses (activity between synapses) in your brain, it can stop your brain from working, which cause serious brain damage or could kill you cause you'd stop breathing. Also, it can interrupt the beat of your heart, which can cause irreguar heart beats or stop it completely. If help is close then it is possible someone could use a defib device and shock your heart back into a regular beat.

Apart from the importance in electromagnetic interactions at the molecular level and the action of the nervous system, large amounts of electricity will burn a path through the body (the quickest path) through to the earth. The tissues along that path, usually muscle, bone and fat will be cooked. The severity of such incidents will not always be apparent at first presentation. There is a chance it will mess up the firing of the heart and cause a fit in the brain.

Electricity allows your body to function...cell processes, including reactions that allow thinking to occur...everything in your body needs electricity to work. Cells are, of course, composed of molecules / atoms, and their electrons are constantly producing electricity.
Tiny amounts of electricity applied from the outside, like what happens when you place gold on your skin, do no harm...may even help. Now, if you mean what does applying gargantuan amounts of electricity from outside to the body, that is a different story. That really burns me up.
