Most of them look down on Goths because they have little clue of what it is, myself being an Industrial-Goth I see what Goth really is, The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, up to the more modern Cruxshadows and Bella Morte, and Emo has the same story, with bands like Rites of Spring, and Embrace, though it is completely unrelated to Goth...Other than the fact that they are both children of Punk.
However mainstream society lumps Goth, Emo, and Punk all together (wrongly) into wrist-slitting, devil worshipping, MTV fanatics listening to Marilyn Manson and My Chemical Romance.
I believe the "mundanes" think Goths and Emos worship Satan for two reasons:
1) They don't understand the subcultures
2) They don't understand Satanism/Devil worship - Which are two completely differant things. http://www.freewebs.com/satanismexplanation/ <---Click that for an explanation of true Satanism
They thought that all are wanna-bes comes from three sources:
1) People who don't believe in any subcultures (i.e. "No one's differant, there is no such thing as Goth")
2) People within the subculture who are sick of wanna-bes (I would fall into this catagory) I get sick of 13 year old morons calling themselves Gothic when they've never heard any real Gothic music, and they cant explain the subculture beyond the color black
3) The fact that for the most part "mundanes" are only exposed to wanna-bes

I see what your saying. People consider me Goth, Punk or Emo but I'm not either I'm just me, I don't label myself but if others want to do so that is on them. People are just ignorant and assume anyone who looks or live that life style are generally depressed and hate everything which is true SOMETIMES. I just like a bit of darkness in my life. I don't pretend to act like everything in the world is alright or that I am alright. I'm just real honest. When a person looks down on a person just because they are this or that it is the same as being racist and prejudice. But everyone likes different music, clothes, etc. It is just a preference and everyone should respect every ones preference in whatever. I respect every ones choices so should they. They might see it as abnormal but of course whatever a majority of the people act or how they act themselves in normal. So basically be yourself and respect others for what they are, there is no such thing as normal.

I'm a DURACELL myself, I'm always optimistic, maximalistic I simply can't sit on a place all the day. Personally I don't look down at anyone, cuz everyone must have a right to express themselves. I had to work with emos a few times and found out that their company make me feel really uncomfortable. I love my ego too much to want some suffering, so I simply avoid them :)

Well, it because of lack of understanding. like not everyone knows goths properly or understands them. their style of dress and everything all just looks strange and freaky. especially the colour black if you think about it, connotations of death and yeah devil worshippers. But i agree with you..were all the same people. and i know some 'goths' personally and they're really nice people and defiantly not 'devil worshippers'. besides blame it on the media! they just have a way of portraying things that stick into peoples minds. thats why people i think, look down on Goths and Emo's

I just have problems with some within the stereotype...acting like they know about truth and emotion but have not experienced anything worth experienceing...they limit them selfs at such a young age and refuse to listen to logic...they rather get all their answers for the people that write the music they listen to...and that is very dangerous. The ones that like the music is great...that is a choice...but the ones that base their lives around a type of music are dumba**es. Why limit yourself?

I have no probs with them, in fact I think they are OK. They tend to be the sensitive arty creative types, probably the best types there are never mind they go round looking like Neo from The Matrix.

i can relate to what you're saying.
back in the day when i was still in skool, i used to get pushed around a lot coz i was, and still, am a punk. all these uneducated kids come up to me and say "do you do drugs? do you drink alcohol?..." they assumed i did all that coz of the punk stereotype. well i'm straight-edge and when i explain to them what that means they're saying i'm not a proper punk. they can go f*** themselves. i love being a punk, don't care what they say.
those ppl who look down on them are just lowlives looking for fun. their fault they're so damn stupid.

Because you look stupid.
Besides there are few real Goths out there today , most are just stupid kids wearing black and listening to crap "music" about death - that`s not Goth.
